Dear Madeleine!
Many thanks for your letter. I was so frightened about this war, that I hardly did anything except listen in the whole day long. I can’t understand how people have lived through the last war without a wireless. You don’t know how grateful we all feel toward Chamberlain. He is one of the greatest politicians. I just feel like giving him a kiss for preservation of peace. He is a great favourite with all my family. He ought to get the Order of the Garter. I felt particularly frightened about the war, as Ludwig would have had to go too. Mami wants to go to Bavaria one of these days to meet Baby. Imagine the poor girl is not yet at her new home. Her house is finished but for one pipe and as long as they cant get it, they have no water. I do hope that she has left Luzern by now and is in Lindau. From there she is going to furniture her home. It must be great fun to do it.
Well Muck and me spend our lives twiddling our thumbs. Or we fight. The Irvine girl is gone and we have nothing to do. We take Hungarian lessons twice a week. And I sew with my marvellous sewing machine. I sew vest and knickers for the poor. It is very good practice.
Deidi is in Mandelieu. I am already looking forward to seeing her during the shootings in November. Her husband is very keen on shooting and they’ll come back for that. The other day we had great fun. We went to see our girl friend who lives 10 miles from here. We took 3 hours to ride there. We had lunch there and she accompanied us back half way. I felt so tied after that!
I am late for lunch. Much love
Loll
