Infantry Replacement Battalion 488
The battalion was set up on 29th August 1939 in Lindau, Military District VII. The Infantry Replacement Battalion 488 was subordinate to Division 157 and provided a replacement for the 268th Infantry Division. On 26th September 1939, the battalion's staff formed the staff of the II. Battalion, Infantry Regiment 331, 167th Infantry Division. The staff was re-established on 1st February 1940, with contributions from Infantry Replacement Battalion 468. From 1st April 1940, the battalion was subordinate to Division 147. On 1st Octobe 1942, the battalion was divided in Lindau into an Infantry Replacement Battalion 488 and a Reserve Infantry Battalion 488. The reserve battalion was relocated to Zwiahel in the Ukraine and placed under the command of the 147th Reserve Division. From 1st October 1942, the replacement battalion was subordinate to Division 407. Both battalions were renamed Grenadier Replacement Battalion 488 and Reserve Grenadier Battalion 488 on 7th November 1942. In February 1944, the reserve battalion formed the 2nd Battalion of the Grenadier (Field Training) Regiment North Ukraine, which later became Grenadier (Field Training) Regiment 562. The replacement battalion was expanded on 20th July 1944 to become Grenadier Replacement and Training Battalion 488. From September 1944, the replacement battalion was subordinate to Division 467 .
