Erich Meerwald

Erich Meerwald (1895 - 1973) was a German painter, graphic artist, stamp artist and philatelist.

From 1939 onwards he designed numerous stamps and other printed matter for the German Reichspost, including the stamps and series Automobile Exhibition 1939, Reichsberufswettbewerb 1939, Helgoland 1940, Postage Stamp Day 1941, Blue Ribbon 1941, Grand Prix of the Reich Capital 1941, Styria series 1941, European Postal Congress 1942, Postage Stamp Day 1943, Wehrmacht Day series 1943, Youth Commitment Day 1943, German Airmail Service 1944, Postage Stamp Day 1944, Volkssturm 1945 and the last stamp issued by the German Reichspost with the motif 'SS man', but also front pages of telegram sheets and the like.

After the Second World War, he appeared again on Federal Postal Service stamps with a series of agricultural motifs on the welfare stamps of the Helpers of Humanity series of 1958.

Meerwald was equally successful in the field of commercial graphics, for example he designed the poster for the film Ben Hur. However, his design for the first 500-mark note was not accepted.

From 1954 to 1961 he was the first chairman of the 'Allgemeiner Postwertzeichen-Sammlerverein e. V.' (APS) in Darmstadt and then honorary chairman. Together with his Belgian wife Alice Mahieu (1890-1973) he formed a recognised philatelic couple with rare exhibition exhibits. In particular, he owned a considerable Belgium collection.

In addition, the Meerwald couple played a major role in the twin town partnership between Darmstadt and Troyes in 1958.
