Colonial cancellations
Note on JB:Berlin210/108. Bochmann gives no detail as to the identity of the soldier depicted in the cancellation, however, this almost certainly depicts Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck (1870-1964), the 'Rommel' of East Africa.
In 1936 former governor of German East Africa, Heinrich Schnee established the Reichskolonialbund. In his role as governor Schnee had close personal and operation ties to Lettow-Vorbeck during the First World War. Both men returned as heroes following the armastice and there can be no doubt that such cancellations as the one above were optomising the propaganda value of such a well loved soldier.
